Extractions

Is It Painful?

Regular visits to your dentist and good oral hygiene are the first defence against tooth decay, but sometimes your teeth need intervention with a filling or crown. If your dentist at Horizon Family Dentistry finds a brown or black spot on a tooth, he will take an X-ray to confirm if that spot is dental decay – a cavity. If the cavity is very small, we may check it later to see if it has grown, or we can fill a small cavity right then to play it safe. If you have a large cavity, a dental filling is necessary before the decay worsens and causes pain.

A Solution For Wisdom Teeth

Your wisdom teeth (or your third molars), are usually the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. Your wisdom teeth can be functional if they are healthy and positioned correctly. However, there are often reasons why you may need to have your wisdom teeth extracted. In some cases your wisdom teeth can become impacted or only partially erupt through the gum in a misalignment. When impacted or partially impacted, your wisdom teeth can cause swelling, pain and even infection in the surrounding gum. They can also put pressure on the adjacent teeth, which can result in permanent damage to otherwise healthy teeth and their surrounding bone.

Sometimes, impacted or partially impacted wisdom teeth can also lead to the formation of cysts, and in worse case scenarios tumours, which could potentially destroy an entire section of your jaw. Finally, due to the difficulty of cleaning an impacted tooth, they need to be removed in order to prevent decay. For these reasons, the smart move is to have your wisdom teeth removed

Why do I need an Extraction

Teeth may need to be removed (extracted) for a number of reasons. If you have a decayed tooth which is severely degraded and cannot be reconstructed with a dental filling, the tooth will need to be extracted. Also, poorly positioned teeth may cause damage to your mouth and the only option is to remove it. We may suggest tooth extraction because your tooth is abscessed, you have advanced gum disease, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
